![]() Bolivia: Never too late for a new beginning After 30 years of living with in-laws and other relatives and eight years as a Habitat Bolivia partner family Dario Fuertes Sanabria and his wife Esther Borges are about to make the final payment on their Habitat house. “I had to reach my ‘golden years’ before the dream of owning my own home became real,” says the 77-year-old retired professor, who uses his university pension to make his monthly payment. “It’s a reality within which I can comfortably rest with my wife until the time comes for us to depart.” The Fuertes Sanabria family found their opportunity for independence in a Habitat for Humanity project that offered credit for construction. Dario used radio stations to locate former colleagues with whom he had attempted to purchase land in the early 1990s. That acquisition project had fallen through because of a lack of funds for any construction. This time around, four families agreed to join the project and worked together to legalize the land and meet Habitat partnership requirements. “Now we can live our final years together and in peace,” Dario says, “with the tranquility that comes with being able to make decisions in our own home.” By Alejandra Dominguez, director of advocacy for Habitat Bolivia |
