Sharing the love
Filipino professional basketball player Chris Tiu helps build it.
For Valentine’s Day 2009, Habitat Youth Ambassador Alexandra Madrigal Eduque gave a special gift to families in the Philippines in need of decent housing: a day on the build site with family, friends and Filipino professional basketball player Chris Tiu to lend a helping hand.
Other groups who built with her included Victory Christian Fellowship and the Council of Cool from Candy magazine, a popular teen magazine in the Philippines.
The youth volunteers put on “Heart Hats” and worked to “Spread the gLOVE” at a resettlement site in Brgy. Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City, a project funded by the office of Mayor Bobby Eusebio to provide decent, affordable and durable houses in partnership with 120 of his constituents, with 416 more families to be served at another nearby project site.
The event also served as a bonding family activity for both the Eduques and the Tius; Alex’s parents, Mandy and Chuchu, came to support their daughter and put their building skills to use, while Chris’ family and friends learned the ropes of house building. Chris and his family even engaged in a race to see who could make the best concrete interlocking blocks.
