Building Together
Building Together
The Dow Chemical Company was Habitat’s first corporate partner. Over its three-plus decades of support, Dow has been instrumental in the construction of nearly 39,000 homes in 24 countries on six continents.
To celebrate three decades of working with Habitat, Dow volunteers are helping to build 30 homes in 30 communities around the world — including a first for the company in Ghana.
The company has pledged more than $1.3 million in funding and Dow anticipates $4 million of gift-in-kind contributions of STYROFOAM™ brand insulation products.
“It’s an enduring relationship because of how well aligned Habitat’s mission is with our company interest in providing energy-efficient affordable housing around the world.” — Bo Miller, Dow’s global director of corporate citizenship and executive director of the Dow Foundation
“Thirty-year-old trailer to a new home, there’s a substantial amount of difference. We used to joke and call the trailer ‘the caulk house’ because with every little hole, I’d get out the caulk gun and patch it up. I used to start in June winterizing it because it would take me that long. The first year I was here, I was like, I don’t have anything to do! I liked it.” — Mary Jacobs, owner of a Dow-sponsored Midland County Habitat for Humanity home in Michigan
“The volunteer experience allows our employees to engage their manual skills but also their professional ones,” Miller says. “Dow employees consult with affiliates, serve on local affiliate boards and offer skills like financial planning or accounting. Working with Habitat can touch all aspects of our employee base, from plant workers to executives, from the U.S. to China to Ghana.”
