Energy-efficient building in Bulgaria

A Habitat Bulgaria partnership is exploring more energy-efficient construction.

This summer, a group of visiting Global Village volunteers — Bulgaria’s first — broke ground for four new energy-efficient houses in the municipality of Kostinbrod, near the capital city of Sofia. The construction site had first been prepared by Credit Suisse and Whirlpool corporate teams.

The houses are part of a partnership between Habitat, Austrian brick producer Wienerberger and its companies Tondach and Pipelife. Wienerberger donated bricks, Tondach provided roof tiles, and Pipelife covered plumbing.

Each house is built with a combination of different materials to test their energy-efficiency and identify the most efficient and affordable models for replication.
