Amway partners with Habitat for Humanity to build decent housing in Latin America
Construction is underway with $500,000 in funding
ATLANTA, August 3, 2011 — Amway, a global multilevel direct sales company, has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build homes throughout Latin America. In Guatemala, the new “Habitat Colony by Amway” is under construction, funded by a $500,000 donation from Amway and a seed gift of $250,000 by Amway’s Tim Foley and his eFinity group of distributors.
More than 80 volunteers from various Habitat and Amway offices in North and Central America gathered in the Guatemalan department of Zacapa at the end of February to raise the walls on 12 new homes in the community. Amway, Habitat, eFinity and partner families expect to build 50 houses in Usamutlan over the next five years on the site that will eventually accommodate 70 homes. Amway employees are also currently assisting Habitat with disaster response projects in Brazil and Colombia.
“Amway teams feel so rewarded working side by side with Habitat homeowner partners,” said Eduardo Casas, director of Communications and Public Relations, Amway Latin America. “Amway Business Owners and corporate staff have a strong commitment to the region. We are living our values by giving back in the region where we work and raise our families.”
Additional Amway initiatives with Habitat include a blitz build of homes in El Salvador, Costa Rica and Argentina in September. There are also plans to build and repair homes in Colombia this October and in Brazil next year.
“The commitment of corporate partners like Amway helps families across the globe realize the dream of simple, decent and affordable housing,” said Torre Nelson, vice president of Latin America and the Caribbean area office, Habitat for Humanity International. “The generosity and support of Amway has greatly helped Habitat address the need for adequate shelter throughout Latin America.”
Amway is a global leader in the direct sales industry. Founded in 1959, it currently has a presence in over 80 countries and territories and has over 3 million distributors worldwide. For more information about Amway, visit www.amway.com.
