Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast of the United States in the fall of 2005. An estimated 500,000 houses were destroyed by wind, water and mold. In the wake of this unprecedented disaster, Habitat for Humanity launched Operation Home Delivery to coordinate Habitat’s hurricane relief efforts to help low-income affected families. The program involved the “house-in-a-box” project, where communities across the country built house frames and shipped the panelized walls in containers to the Gulf Coast. The goal was to jump start the rebuilding process while conditions on the ground remained restrictive. |

One of the crowning achievements of Habitat for Humanity’s Operation Home Delivery was “America Builds on the National Mall,” a 51-house frame event sponsored by Freddie Mac. Local Habitat affiliate volunteers from each state joined their congressional representatives to construct 51 house frames on the National Mall representing each state and the District of Columbia. The frames were then containerized and shipped to the Gulf Coast. |
