All-Star Build 2012: Joplin
On May 22, 2011, a tornado devastated the town of Joplin, Missouri. Churning, 200 mile per hour wind gusts tore a 13-mile long swath right through Joplin and into neighboring Duquesne and rural areas. Some 7,500 homes were either destroyed or damaged and 161 people lost their lives.
Landmarks that once helped people find their way were gone. Favorite neighborhood diners were wiped off the grid. It truly was as if the entire city of Joplin was in the bull’s eye of the tornado.
A year later, many people are still living in temporary accommodations or damaged shelters. For the Hayes, Thompson, Gutierrez, Deleon and Smith families, the All-Star Build and Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity offer hope, homeownership, and a new sense of security.
