Benton Habitat for Humanity brings people together to make simple, decent homes achievable for everyone in our community. A key member of the team is the executive director who supervises and coordinates all program services, administration and fundraising of BHFH. The executive director is responsible for working with and through others to accomplish these functions principally with other staff, the board, BHFH committee members, Habitat for Humanity and key local community partners. The executive director reports to the board of directors (specifically to the board president) and is evaluated by the oersonnel committee of the board of directors.
The nature of the activities and the key constituencies the executive director works with requires flexibility in the hours worked. More specifically, the position may require more than 40 hours per week and evening and weekend hours. This position is exempt from Fair Labor Standards and Practices overtime compensation requirements as a professional position requiring substantial specialized knowledge, independent decision-making and supervisory responsibility.
The executive director is responsible for Benton Habitat for Humanity’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.
Responsibilities
Strategic planning, program development and administration:
- Ensure that BHFH makes consistent and timely progress towards its long-range strategy.
- Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with the board of directors and staff, and carry out the plans and policies authorized by the board.
- Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization's work.
- Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
- Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends.
Communication and public relations:
- Keep the board fully informed on the condition of BHFH and all important factors influencing it.
- Publicize the activities of BHFH, including its programs and goals.
- Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with local and state community groups and nonprofit organizations.
- Represent the programs and point of view of BHFH to agencies, organizations and the general public.
Staff management:
- Be responsible for the recruitment, employment and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
- Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held and that sound human resource practices are in place.
- See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.
- Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
- Maintain a climate, which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.
Budgeting and financial management:
- Be responsible for maintaining sound financial practices.
- Work with the staff, the finance committee, and the board in preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
- Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit BHFH to fulfill its mission.
- In cooperation with the board of directors, conduct all official correspondence of BHFH and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.
Required attributes

- Demonstrated expertise in project, event or fundraising management.
- Experience in property development or mortgage management a benefit.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Superior organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
- Belief in and commitment to the Habitat for Humanity philosophy.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
