Job Description

Terms of employment: Full-time, exempt
This position is supervised by: Director of operations

Job summary
Responsible for all aspects of recruiting, training, coordinating, scheduling, supervising, tracking and acknowledging volunteers for affiliate projects in cooperation with the construction director and the cirector of cevelopment.

Essential functions include:

  • Contacting churches, schools, corporations, civic organizations, volunteer bureaus and the public at large to recruit volunteers. Making presentations to these and to other community groups regarding the affiliate's work and volunteer needs and opportunities.
  • Coordinating with HFHI and other state or national groups to recruit volunteers.
  • Recruiting and working with special needs and non-traditional volunteers, assisting all groups with special volunteer needs and assisting with transportation and logistical coordination as necessary.
  • Coordinating with development director regarding corporate or special events.
  • Preparing volunteer manual and assisting with preparation and revision of materials for volunteer orientation program.
  • Maintaining volunteer database, including contact information, skills and interests.
  • Recruiting, training and scheduling adequate crews of volunteer labor for construction projects in coordination with the construction director. Maintaining relations with special skills volunteers.
  • Developing programs to identify volunteers to provide professional services as needed.
  • Coordinating with staff and assessing and responding to overall affiliate and Habitat ReStore needs for volunteers for other committee work and special projects and events.
  • Preparing training materials as needed and ensuring that volunteers have the tools and materials necessary to do tasks.
  • Developing and implementing a system of volunteer recognition and appreciation, including thank you notes, awards and articles for the newsletter.
  • Tracking, documenting and recording volunteer contributions of time and talent.
  • Assisting with identified administrative and support tasks including maintaining affiliate contact and donor databases, assisting with coordination for bulk mailings, and providing support for affiliate special events.
  • In collaboration with other affiliate staff, recruiting, hiring, training and supervising AmeriCorps volunteers.

Position specifications:

Unique knowledge and skills

  • Familiarity and comfort with Habitat for Humanity's mission, methods, principles and structure.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with staff, board members, committee chairs, business and community leaders, representatives of civic and community organizations, homeowners, sponsors and volunteers.
  • Strong, effective, oral communication skills, including public speaking and/or training experience.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and cooperate with other Habitat staff and committee chairs to develop and implement volunteer support for affiliate activities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of, understanding of and experiences with principles and practice of volunteer management.
  • Computer skills, including word processing, email, presentation and spreadsheet software, as well as maintenance of donor and volunteer databases.
  • Ability to effective relate to and work with volunteers and families of diverse races, cultures, faiths, income levels and skill levels.
  • The ability to relate to diverse populations, including those suffering from economic hardships, as well as business, community and church leaders.
  • Experience with volunteer activities or organizations as volunteer or manager.

Minimum education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, sociology, human services, psychology or other related field.
  • Four years of experience working with volunteers.

Special requirements

  • Position requires working 40 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday, including all build days.
  • Position requires occasional evening and weekend meetings.
