Habitat for Humanity Paraguay celebrates 13 years of serving families in need

Since 1998, Habitat for Humanity Paraguay has helped more than 1,700 low-income families to access better housing, and has mobilized hundreds of volunteers to the cause.

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay (September 9, 2011) – Habitat for Humanity Paraguay is celebrating 13 years of serving low-income families in the country, daily demonstrating God’s love in action.

Habitat for Humanity opened its doors in Paraguay in 1998, building its first three houses in Puerto Botánico, Asunción. Since then, numerous citizens and local organizations have joined the cause, helping Habitat to promote equal access to adequate housing in the country. As of July, 2011, more than 1,700 low-income Paraguayan families have improved their housing condition thanks to the organization.

Throughout its 13 years of service to families in need, Habitat for Humanity Paragauy has expanded its reach to new communities in Boquerón, Caaguazú, Concepción, Itapúa, Presidente Hayes and San Pedro.

Habitat for Humanity Paraguay mobilizes national and international volunteers to the cause, who show their support with immense solidarity. Volunteers build alongside partner families, advocate for adequate housing in their own communities, contribute skills and donate economic resources to Habitat’s mission. In the last year, more than 300 international volunteers from the United States, Canada and Europe donated their sweat and time. Additionally, more than 7,945 volunteer hours were donated locally to diverse Habitat initiatives.

Currently, Habitat Paraguay’s programs “For the future of our children”, “Serving partners”, “Adequate housing for educators” and “Together for a home” are bringing hope to many more families.

“At Habitat for Humanity, we are convinced that when housing conditions improve the home is transformed—to a place where parents, grandparents, children can work, study, play and share a fuller and happier life, in community,” said Mary Lechenuk, national director for Habitat for Humanity Paraguay.
