Habitat for Humanity drives to work for stronger communities through adequate and affordable housing in World Habitat Day 2013
SAN JOSE (October 7) - This year’s World Habitat Day is celebrated on Monday, October 7. In recognition of the celebration, Habitat for Humanity Latin America and the Caribbean had a series of activities in different countries to meet the need of adequate housing worldwide.
Habitat for Humanity International joins the day designated by the United Nations in recognition of the basic need for adequate shelter worldwide. Currently, 1.6 billion people worldwide live in inadequate housing. According to the UN, there is a deficit in the region of 28 million quantitative units and 26 million qualitative deficit with an increasing trend.
That’s why around the world, national offices of the Habitat network will celebrate World Habitat Day with a ” Door Parade” in different parts of major cities, which have been decorated by volunteers to raise awareness of the need for adequate, safe and affordable housing. Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Bolivia and Brazil are part of the Latin American countries that will be part of this initiative.
Other countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala, Argentina, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago join the celebrations with other activities like apartment buildings, forums, visits to schools and cultural activities. Habitat activities began with World Prayer Day on Sunday October 6, reaching the hearts and minds of people around the world and showing that poverty housing is unacceptable. Adequate housing is a prerequisite for breaking the cycle of poverty.
