AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon

An annual event that brings together AmeriCorps members and alumni in a weeklong blitz build.
The event highlights local community needs for affordable housing while celebrating AmeriCorps members’ service with Habitat.

Held at a different U.S. Habitat affiliate each year.

In the past, Build-a-Thons have been held in:

  • Cedar Rapids, Iowa
  • The Gulf Coast
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Mobile County, Alabama
  • Jacksonville, Florida.

2011 Build-a-Thon
More than 450 AmeriCorps National and VISTA members will participate in seven events scheduled during or around National AmeriCorps Week (May 14-21).

This year’s event sites include:

  • Franklin, West Virginia
  • Bay St. Louis, Mississippi
  • Birmingham, Alabama
  • Seattle and King County, Washington
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  • Wilmington, Delaware
  • Pensacola, Florida.

“Habitat’s Build-a-Thon provides an opportunity for our AmeriCorps National and VISTA members to share ideas and meet others committed to service and to eliminating poverty housing,” said Larry Gluth, Habitat for Humanity International’s senior vice president of U.S and Canada.

“Our AmeriCorps members consistently play a pivotal role in the operations of more than 140 Habitat locations across the country. Their collective efforts have helped thousands of families obtain the dream of homeownership this year alone. We are truly grateful for their service.”

About last year’s Build-a-Thon

Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity hosted the Habitat event from June 11–18, 2010. More than 500 Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps members from across the country gathered to build, rehabilitate and repair more than 20 homes in Cedar Rapids, IA.

The 2010 event celebrated 15 years of AmeriCorps members helping Habitat for Humanity affiliates and partner organizations build affordable houses and eliminate substandard housing.
