JCWP BEHIND-THE-SCENES:REGISTRATION/HOSPITALITY TEAM What does the registration and hospitality team do? "We smile a lot," says Nancy Hackley. And they tell people where the air-conditioned bus and the misting tent are. This combination has made their area at the edge of the work site very popular with many hot volunteers. Already this morning, the temperature has risen to 94 degrees, and it isn't noon yet. This is also where local construction workers come to volunteer their skills. "They put out a call this morning for specialists in differerent areas--roofers, plumbers, drywall," says Hackley. Local workers have responded in large numbers as the need has arisen. Many contractors have given their employees leave to volunteer at the site. A representative of the local plumbers' union visited the site to learn the exact needs and recruit union volunteers with those skills. "We even had a policeman stop by to see if he could work on his day off," says Joyce Percival. Registration and hospitality team members have traveled from as far away as California and Minnesota to participate in this year's build. "This is concrete," says Hackley. "You see the progress, and when you leave, you've accomplished something." |
