Traditional "Habitation" Celebration Concludes Week's Build

MARAGONDON, Philippines (March 26, 1999) -- At the end of the day on Friday, the last official day of the 1999 Jimmy Carter Work Project, only "punch lists" of basic tasks remained. Volunteers worked to put finishing touches on the 293 houses being built on six sites in the Philippines.

"If you've finished your house, please go to another house and help them finish," said former President Jimmy Carter during a lunch break, exhorting volunteers at the biggest of six build sites. "We've got 130 houses to finish before we go home."

The week-long build concluded with a traditional Habitation ceremony Friday night. Menardo Jimenez, chairman of the JCWP '99 Advisory Council, led a gathering of 5,000 volunteers at the Maragondon, Cavite, build site, in this responsive prayer:

Jimenez: As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

People: Put your hope in God.

Jimenez: My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you.

People: Put your hope in God.

Jimenez: Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.

People: Put your hope in God.

Jimenez: By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

All: We put our hope in God, for we will yet praise him, our Savior and our God.

Dozens of volunteers planned to return to work on the "punch lists" again Saturday.
