Alabama Power employees
building houses, teamwork
By Leigh Powell
Marsha Tucker of Oxford, Ala., is proud to be working on House #3, which is sponsored by her employer, Alabama Power. Most of the volunteers working on this house are Alabama Power employees, all of whom were given the opportunity to sign up to build this week.
“Many of the employees are familiar with Habitat,” says Marsha, “and I always have a desire to volunteer and help someone.” Marsha has previously volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Birmingham, Ala., where she used to live.
Despite her support of Habitat’s mission, Marsha admits that her construction experience is limited. “I would say my experience is minimal,” she laughs, “but I understand the basics.” She says painting is her favorite job on the work site.
But Marsha also understands that the basics of Habitat go beyond simply hammering and painting: She is happy to have an opportunity to interact with Rae Bradford, the future homeowner who will live in the house.
“You can tell she’s excited,” Marsha says. “I’m glad to definitely see her out here working with us. It gives you a face for the person you’re helping.”
Marsha is also pleased at the opportunity building gives for creating a sense of teamwork with other Alabama Power employees.
“Just to be out here with fellow co-workers, and you’re sharing the same common paths and goalsit lets you know that we’re all a team, and that goes beyond just work to also serving the community.”
