Volunteer profile: Aly Wiersma

Among the 72 volunteers from the Netherlands at this year's Jimmy Carter Work Project was Aly Wiersma. Aly and several other Dutch volunteers put their efforts into House #49—the Silva Montesinos house, sponsored by Gap Inc.

Some people asked Aly why she would travel all the way to Mexico to help build houses. Why not just give money, they asked. "It's not just about the money," Aly explains. She became passionate about Habitat for Humanity's mission a few years ago when she participated in a Global Village trip to the Philippines. Seeing the need there made her want to do more.

Aly says she will tell others about Habitat for Humanity and encourage them to get involved. "You take some of the place you visit and volunteer with you," Aly says, "and it changes you. That's the great thing about…these kinds of trips."
