Nearly 500 volunteers are working under a broiling sun in Haiti during the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. This week, as they're sleeping in cramped tents and sometimes hammering their fingers, many of these volunteers carry with them stories and memories of people who are not physically in Haiti, but who are nonetheless connected to the work being done. These are five stories of those who are here in spirit. — Compiled by Teresa K. Weaver, Phil Kloer and Phillip Jordan
