We prioritize families living with dirt or deteriorated floors, especially those led by women, with young children, elderly members, or people with disabilities.

Mariana (55 years old) is a single mother of ten children, four of them girls. A tree root had broken the little flooring they had left. Rain and humidity were a constant problem and the cause of illnesses. Now, Mariana is grateful to God and Habitat for her new floor.

“Before, the floor had cracks, a hole, and the entire floor was deteriorating. I used cement to patch the holes, but they always came back. Now I’m happy and thankful because I have a new floor. Thanks to Habitat, it’s clean and raised.” —Juana, Dominican Republic
Guatemala.
“Before, the house got so wet that my little girl was constantly sick. She had frequent diarrhea and a persistent cough. She would get sick every ten to fifteen days. Now, with the concrete floor, she hardly gets sick,” says Silvia. Silvia’s home was selected to replace her dirt floor with a concrete one. This housing improvement contributed to a better quality of life and health for the entire family. “When they gave me the floor, my little girl got so much better—no more cough or diarrhea. What I love most about my new floor is that my house is cleaner and nicer. It’s much easier to clean.”

“Before, I felt bad. I didn’t have the strength to make my floor. I always said: ‘my time will come.’ Now I feel joyful, at peace, and calm—this, to me, is priceless.” —Máximo
Colombia.
Isabel was displaced from her hometown due to violence in Colombia. She arrived in Cartagena and, through hard work, built her home, where she lives with her two children and two grandchildren. Like many grandmothers, she takes care of them while their mother works. Thanks to the concrete floor, she feels safer, more at ease, and can let her grandchildren play on the floor without fear of injury or illness.

“I didn’t feel good with my floor. My daughter’s room would flood and, when it rained, everything got dirty. My daughter always had the flu. Now my family is more comfortable. We feel grateful.” —Luisa
Nicaragua.
Like many grandmothers, Cándida Rosa takes care of her grandson while the child’s mother works to earn an income. “My husband built this little shop, and we’re slowly stocking it. Now that we have a proper floor, things are better—the display cases are better placed, cleaner, and we’re improving day by day.”
