RV Care-A-Vanners

RV travel with a purpose

RV travel just got better! RV Care-A-Vanners is a volunteer program for anyone who travels in a recreational vehicle, wants to build Habitat houses and have fun doing it. RV Care-A-Vanners welcomes people of all ages, from all walks of life who want to pick up a hammer and help change lives.

No experience is necessary

Every RV Care-A-Vanner build project is a unique and rewarding experience. There are ample opportunities to learn and plenty of meaningful work for everyone. No previous construction experience is necessary.

RV Care-A-Vanner volunteers participate in projects such as:

  • House construction
  • Roofing
  • Interior and finish work
  • Renovations
  • Disaster relief

Those who prefer non-construction activities can volunteer in the Habitat affiliate office or act as “gofers” around the build site.

What to expect on a build

RV Care-A-Vanner build events normally last two weeks and involve teams of eight to 20 volunteers. Build events usually begin with a welcome gathering thrown by the local Habitat host affiliate. The work days typically consist of a morning devotional, six to seven hours of building with morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Lunches are provided.

What to bring and what will be provided

Volunteers should bring sturdy work shoes, gloves, a tool belt, hammer, square, pencil and measuring tape. The local Habitat host affiliate will provide everything else, including instruction, supervision, power tools, building materials and ladders. Due to safety and hygiene issues, pets are not permitted on the work site.

What you will give and what you will receive

RV Care-A-Vanner volunteers each pay their own expenses, which may be tax deductible. The local Habitat host affiliate will arrange for free or low-cost RV parking. Volunteers can expect at least minimal electric hookups, access to water and a nearby dump station.

Aside from the opportunity to use existing construction skills and learn new ones, RV Care-A-Vanner volunteers experience God’s love in action firsthand. Lasting friendships develop as the group parks together, builds together, eats together and plays together. In addition, the team often has the opportunity to work alongside local volunteers and future homeowners—a truly unforgettable experience.

We do more than just build houses

Habitat for Humanity and the RV Care-A-Vanners are about much more than building houses. Many RV Care-A-Vanners help local Habitat affiliates raise the awareness of poverty housing and homelessness by speaking to churches, civic groups and local media. Individual Care-A-Vanners often make donations to their local Habitat affiliate and some even organize fund-raising teams and sponsor entire houses.
