Habitat for Humanity Australia Calls for Support to Help Rebuild Communities Devastated by Deadly Bushfires

Appeal for Donations and Skilled Volunteers

SYDNEY, 13th February 2009: Habitat for Humanity Australia has promised to help rebuild the communities devastated by bushfires that have swept the southern state of Victoria. HFH Australia will partner with authorities and families over the coming months.

As the emergency services and disaster response teams continue their vital roles, containing the fires and providing much-needed assistance and support, HFH Australia has pledged to deliver a long-term strategy to construct new homes for a meaningful number of families in need.

HFH Australia is calling for volunteers and skilled tradesmen and women to assist in a unique way by actively getting involved in the recovery program, and to help with the rebuilding efforts over the next year as soon as the immediate clean-up operation is complete and overall rebuilding plans settled.

The worst bushfire disaster in Australian history has killed up to 200 people, destroying small towns and leaving an estimated 5,000 people homeless.

HFH Australia’s chairman David Benn said: “Gaining the support of the Australian public is vital to ensure we have the resources to assist those in desperate need of safe and secure housing after losing virtually everything.”

Domestic Executive Director Scott Langford added: “Shelter and housing needs will need to be met for months and even years to come. We want to make sure that we are helping people get on the road to recovery at the earliest available opportunity. With the help of generous Australians and willing volunteers we can make this happen.”

The funds raised in this appeal will be used to help rebuild homes for those families most in need following collaboration with community leaders, government and humanitarian aid agencies.
