Yogyakarta, Indonesia

In Tuksono Village, located in Kulon Progo district, 44% of residents live below the poverty line. Poverty, combined with deteriorating housing conditions, inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean water, has contributed to poor health outcomes throughout the community. Women and children are especially affected, including by stunting, a condition caused by chronic or recurring malnutrition.

Habitat for Humanity Indonesia’s Yogyakarta project office has supported more than 13,000 families since the program began in 1999. Habitat Indonesia also works with a broad network of partners, including government agencies, microfinance institutions, nongovernmental organizations, faith-based organizations and cooperatives, to help address the country’s housing challenges.

During this build, volunteers will work alongside local families, a building contractor and community volunteers to help construct a one-bedroom, one-bathroom home measuring approximately 28 square meters (301 square feet).

Construction tasks may include:

• Mixing cement.
• Bending and wiring rebar.
• Digging and laying the foundation.
• Erecting walls.
• Laying bricks.

Volunteers will stay in double-occupancy rooms at a hotel. Single-occupancy rooms are available by request for an additional charge. Please contact your team leader to request a single-occupancy room. Meals will vary slightly from day to day. Breakfast will be provided at the hotel. Lunches will be served on the build site on workdays and dinner will be at the hotel, local restaurant or arranged by Habitat.
