Who we are – A brief overview
Habitat for Humanity is a trusted global nonprofit tackling one of the world’s most urgent problems: the lack of safe, affordable housing.
Since our founding in 1976, together we have helped more than 62 million people in countries around the world build their life on their own terms through access to decent, affordable housing. (See our recent annual report)
We work in over 70 countries, including through local affiliates across all 50 U.S. states

Our Europe and the Middle East Area Office, based in Bratislava, Slovakia, leads and implements key regional initiatives such as energy efficiency programs, crisis response projects in Ukraine and surrounding countries, and our flagship Empty Spaces to Homes project.
We also mobilize funding from European donors—corporate, institutional, and individual—to support Habitat for Humanity’s mission and projects around the world.
What’s the problem
Social aspect

Today, 1 in 3 people on earth still don’t have a safe, affordable home, more than 2.8 billion people experience some form of housing inadequacy.
Environmental aspect

Nearly 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions come from the real estate sector.
Every safe, affordable home sparks wider change, leading to better health, education and well-being, more economic growth and less poverty. Peace of mind and the ability to focus on what matters most — it all starts with a home.
How we help
At Habitat for Humanity, we go beyond building houses. We create lasting solutions to the housing crisis through eight key areas of impact:
- Safe and Decent Housing
We build and repair homes to ensure families have safe, stable places to live. - Health, Water, and Sanitation
We improve living conditions by addressing health risks and ensuring access to clean water and sanitation. - Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
We promote green building, renewable energy, and sustainable living practices. - Financial Access and Education
We support families with housing microfinance and financial literacy to achieve long-term stability.
- Skills Training and Economic Development
We offer vocational training and support small businesses to strengthen local economies. - Community Engagement and Volunteerism
We mobilize volunteers and communities to take part in building better futures together. - Advocacy
We influence housing policies and systems to improve access to affordable, decent housing for all. - Disaster Response and Resilience
