Charlotte County HFH - VISTA - Resource Development

Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity

Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1987. In our 30+ years we have served over 400 families with our homeownership program. For the last several years, we have been the number one Habitat home producer in the United States for our population size. Charlotte County is located on the Southwest coast of Florida on beautiful Charlotte Harbor and is surrounded by some of the best beaches in Florida. There are plenty of activities to participate in during your off time.

Our affiliate plans to serve 35 families through our homeownership program during fiscal year 2018-2019. With the addition of a VISTA Resource Development member, this goal will be more attainable. Please visit Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity.

Resource Development

Our affiliate was approached by officials from Glades County who were inquiring about the Habitat program and what it would take to get Habitat in their community. We met with them several times and it was quite evident there was a tremendous need for affordable housing in Glades County. We did research and discovered Glades County was the only county south of Okeechobee that did not have a Habitat affiliate. Even thought the population is small, 13,000, the need is big. We worked with HFHI and went through the process to expand our Geographic Service Area. As of December 2017, we now serve Charlotte and Glades Counties. Glades is a rural area with very little infrastructure (no grocery stores in the county). The AmeriCorps VISTA Resource Development will assist in helping us achieve our goals of building two homes by the end of fiscal year 2018-2019 and increasing production to five homes a year within three years. The member will develop a marketing plan for both donor and volunteer engagement, tracking and recognition and create overall awareness for the program in order to achieve sustainability.

About Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity, founded in 1976, is a global, Christian-based nonprofit organization that grew out of an intentionally multi-racial community in rural Georgia. Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat brings together people of all faiths and people of no faith to build homes, communities and hope. Working alongside each other, we help families and individuals build and improve places to call home and achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Habitat seeks individuals who have a willingness to affirm these principles and values.
