Partnering with Habitat to achieve affordable homeownership

As a global housing organization, Habitat’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Equitable and fair access to affordable homeownership is a springboard for families to build intergenerational wealth and drives better economic, health and educational outcomes. Yet 1.8 billion people around the world lack adequate and affordable housing.

The housing affordability crisis in the U.S., driven largely by a shortage of affordable entry-level housing and rising prices, is disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable groups — households of color and low- to moderate-income households.

With homeownership out of their reach, existing racial, wealth, health and educational disparities continue to deepen.

Habitat is committed to removing barriers to affordable homeownership for the most vulnerable communities across the U.S. by:

  • Habitat’s one-of-a-kind affordable financing model. We do not give away houses. Our model offers mortgages with affordable monthly payments to increase homeownership among vulnerable communities, including low- or moderate-income households. We collaborate closely on every aspect of home purchase from application to closing. Repayments are cycled into helping more families build and rehabilitate affordable homes.
  • Partnering with homeowners to set them up for long-term success. Habitat empowers applicants for the responsibilities of homeownership by helping them learn about home maintenance, routine repairs and upkeep of homes, which results in substantial cost savings.
  • Financial education for future homeowners. All future Habitat homeowners take financial education classes to help them manage their affordable mortgages and reap the benefits of long-term homeownership. Given that many vulnerable groups do not have equitable access to financial education, Habitat is dedicated to closing the gap and thereby increasing homeownership in these communities.
  • Influencing housing policy and housing systems to drive housing affordability. As a leader in housing affordability, Habitat advocates for fair and just housing policies at the local, state and federal level. We also collaborate with community partners and share learnings with other players in the housing sector, so together we can impact housing affordability.

The contributions of our donors, community partners and volunteers are critical in helping Habitat drive equitable and fair access to homeownership.

    What is sweat equity?

At Habitat, sweat equity is a new homeowner investing in their home or one for another family. It’s not a form of payment, but an opportunity to work alongside volunteers to bring to life a family’s dream of owning a home.
