Secure tenure

Secure tenure guarantees protection against forced evictions, harassment and other threats.

Living in fear of eviction deprives people in informal settlements of even the most basic security and peace of mind that comes with adequate housing.

Tenure insecurity affects vulnerable and marginalized groups who often face discrimination, gender inequality and unjust land disputes. In some cases, people are denied access to utilities, school enrollment and other basic services due to requirements dependent on tenure status.

We must support policies that ensure protection and access to justice, and that guarantee women the right to secure tenure, regardless of age, marital, civil or social status.

Home Equals will support policy solutions that:

  • Promote legislation and regulations that effectively reduce inequities in housing and land use, leasing, tenancy and ownership.
  • Develop legal frameworks to safeguard against evictions and ensure the continuum of land rights.
  • Create or expand renters’ protections and develop the court system to address tenure disagreements.

Secure tenure is an essential part of our belief that everyone should have access to adequate, affordable housing, which means ensuring people are able to feel secure and stable in their homes without fear of being forced to leave them.
