The Avangrid Foundation grants $135,000 to Habitat for Humanity to help families recover from crises with secure, affordable housing

ATLANTA (May 5, 2021) — The Avangrid Foundation, the philanthropic arm of energy company AVANGRID, Inc., donated $135,000 to Habitat for Humanity to support housing needs for families across the U.S. The foundation will provide funding for Habitat’s long-term disaster recovery work, as well as support several local Habitat organizations’ efforts to help families affected by the housing crisis that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Destruction caused by natural disasters disproportionately affects lower-income communities, leaving families vulnerable to displacement and at risk of being unable to recover. The Avangrid Foundation’s contribution to Habitat’s U.S. long-term disaster recovery program will help local Habitat organizations rebuild and repair homes alongside families affected by disasters.

The donation will also support local Habitat organizations in their work to help communities meet housing challenges put on full display during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Avangrid Foundation’s donation to local Habitat organizations will help affiliates meet the needs of the communities they serve and work with families to build stability and independence through affordable homeownership.

“Safe and affordable housing is critical to combating poverty and helping families live their full potential. The Avangrid Foundation partnership with Habitat for Humanity is at the core of our mission to build sustainable communities and help families,” said Nicole Licata Grant, Avangrid Foundation executive director. “Our national partnership with Habitat has allowed us to invest our time, treasure and talent across the country in great measure.”

Through this long-standing relationship, AVANGRID, Inc.’s companies and their employees have volunteered hundreds of hours building safe, affordable homes in the communities that they power – from Portland, Oregon, to Portland, Maine, and many in between.

“We’re thankful for the Avangrid’s Foundation commitment to families affected by the ongoing housing crisis,” said Julie Laird Davis, vice president of corporate and cause marketing partnerships at Habitat for Humanity International. “The foundation’s investment in our long-term disaster recovery work is a recognition that rebuilding after a disaster takes commitment and a long view. With their support, Habitat will be able to work alongside more communities to build stronger futures together.”

The Avangrid Foundation has contributed $405,000 in grants to Habitat for Humanity since the national partnership began in 2019. Additionally, AVANGRID’s subsidiaries have long-standing relationships with local Habitat organizations, providing corporate donations and hundreds of volunteer hours since 2019 to support decent, affordable housing across the U.S.

About Habitat for Humanity

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity found its earliest inspirations as a grassroots movement on an interracial community farm in south Georgia. Since its founding in 1976, the Christian housing organization has grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
