Everyone deserves a decent place to call home. For 50 years, Habitat has been turning that mission into reality by helping millions of people around the world build, improve or finance their homes.  

Today, we’re building on that momentum. 

We’re popping up in 10 cities worldwide with an art installation of 10 doors, each featuring work from local artists and real homeowner stories. 

Together, they represent what’s possible with a safe, decent foundation. 

 

We popped up live in Washington D.C. on April 11 and 12, 2026
at the National Mall by the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden at 7th St. NW.

Every day, 1 in 3 people on the planet wake up without the security of a safe, affordable home. That’s why Habitat for Humanity is launching Let’s Open the Door, a global campaign to rally people everywhere to take action and help change this reality. Learn more.

Katty Huertas is a multidisciplinary artist born in Colombia and based in Washington, DC. She holds an MFA from MICA. This is a teaser image of her door artwork.

Home is a place where you feel safe and where you can truly be yourself. As an immigrant, to me, it’s also a place where you can store memories brought from home and build a new life.

I approached this project taking direct inspiration from where I live. I included family photos on the wall; one of my grandma when she was young, and the other of my husband and me. I also included my two cats in the piece, as I believe it is a privilege to be able to take care of others.

I wanted the piece to feel warm and welcoming. I bring life into my home by having plants, and so they are featured there too.

This project reminded me of how lucky I am to be able to call a place my own.
