Pop-up doors in Mexico City

Everyone deserves a decent place to call home. For 50 years, Habitat has been turning that mission into reality by helping millions of people around the world build, improve or finance their homes.

Today, we’re building on that momentum.

We’re popping up in 10 cities worldwide with an art installation of 10 doors, each featuring work from local artists and real homeowner stories.

Together, they represent what’s possible with a safe, decent foundation.

Building on our momentum.

Through hands-on builds, pop-up exhibits, compelling new research and powerful storytelling, we’re bringing housing to the center stage at a global scale. Learn more.

César is an Oaxaca and Mexico City based graphic artist. This is a teaser image of his door artwork.

To me, having a safe place to live is a fundamental human right, yet it remains a profound privilege. A home is more than just a structure; it is our most personal sanctuary. It is where we find the quiet we need to rest, the safety we need to dream, and the freedom to truly be ourselves.

In this piece for the Habitat for Humanity 50th anniversary installation, I wanted to capture the “feeling of return” — that specific moment of relief when you walk through your own door after a long day.

I focused on the small, honest rituals that make a space feel lived-in: the warmth of a morning coffee, the way the light hits a room, and the simple companionship of my pets: Duna and Copal. I chose to use my own home and my pets as the primary inspiration for this artwork.

I believe that using real-life inspiration brings a level of sincerity to the illustration that everyone can relate to. By sharing these intimate details, I hope to remind the viewer of their own “safe spot.” These small comforts — a favorite chair, a pet waiting at the door — are what turn a building into a home.
