Hope in the southwest of Haiti

On the morning of Saturday, August 14, 2021, 49-year-old Onézire was sitting peacefully with the youngest of her six children in their home in southwest Haiti. At 8:30 a.m., however, a devastating magnitude 7.2 earthquake began leveling it to the ground. Like the vast majority of her neighbors, Onézire had to sleep out in the open, despite the fact that Haiti’s hurricane season was in full force. With strong rains from Tropical Storm Grace pelting the island in the days following the earthquake, she endured wind, cold, heat and sun.

Esperanza al suroeste de Haití

En la mañana del sábado 14 de agosto de 2021, Onézire, de 49 años, estaba tranquila dentro de su vivienda en el suroeste de Haití con el menor de sus seis hijos, cuando aproximadamente a las 8:30 a.m. un devastador terremoto de magnitud 7,2 sacudió su vivienda. A partir de ese día, su familia, así como la gran mayoría de sus vecinos, empezó a dormir a la intemperie, a pesar de estar en plena temporada de huracanes, con fuertes lluvias en los días posteriores al terremoto, asociadas a la tormenta tropical Grace; soportaron viento, frío, calor y sol, todos los días.
