Habitat for Humanity International announces new project for displaced families in Kalush, Ukraine, with the support of Saint-Gobain Foundation
Bratislava, Slovakia — [December, 2025] — Habitat for Humanity International is pleased to announce Saint-Gobain Foundation’s support for a vital housing project for families displaced by the war in Ukraine.
Habitat for Humanity, together with its Ukrainian partner METALAB and the Municipality of Kalush, is reconstructing an abandoned kindergarten building into 47 apartments of various typologies, providing dignified housing for approximately 150 people. The apartments will offer safety, privacy and stability for families who have spent years displaced by war, enabling them to rebuild their lives in a supportive environment. For this project, initiated by Saint-Gobain Ukraine employees, Saint-Gobain Foundation will support the transformation of the building into safe, affordable and energy-efficient homes for internally displaced people.
The building will also include accessible communal areas and outdoor green spaces. Two of the apartments are designed to European accessibility standards to accommodate families with members with disabilities.
Construction began in March 2025 and is progressing steadily despite the challenges of working in a war-affected environment. Residents are expected to move into their new homes in early 2026.
“Saint-Gobain Foundation’s actions are powered by the passion and the commitment of Saint-Gobain’s employees who sponsor projects with an impact on the communities especially the access to safe and decent housing. This project in partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the Ukrainian teams is a great and concrete illustration of the Group’s purpose “Making the world a better home”” - said Serhii Mospanok, General Manager Saint-Gobain Ukraine
Located in western Ukraine, Kalush has become a place of refuge for thousands of families fleeing active conflict in other parts of the country. Yet the availability of stable and affordable housing remains extremely limited, forcing many displaced people — especially women with children and elderly persons — to remain in overcrowded collective centers or precarious rental accommodation.
Dignity starts with a home — and for families in Kalush, this project offers a safe place to live and delivers safety, stability and the chance to recovery with dignity.
The project aims to demonstrate how unused public buildings can be transformed into sustainable housing solutions, creating a model that provides learning to other cities in need of affordable housing solutions. The refurbished housing complex will remain in municipal ownership and will be managed locally, ensuring long-term availability of affordable housing for vulnerable residents.
A resilient world starts with a home — and this project reflects how communities can recover and grow stronger through innovation, partnership and inclusive housing solutions.
A partnership built on shared values and global impact
Habitat for Humanity and the Saint-Gobain Foundation have partnered since 2013, working together in more than 13 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Americas. Over the years, the partnership has supported housing for homeless families, disaster recovery, social housing initiatives, energy efficiency improvements, community centers, schools, and homes for people with disabilities — combining financial support, in-kind donations, and employee volunteering to deliver lasting impact.
Habitat for Humanity has been working in Central and Eastern Europe for more than three decades and has supported housing responses in Ukraine since the outbreak of the full-scale war. Through partnerships with local organizations, municipalities and the private sector, Habitat continues to develop sustainable solutions to the housing crisis facing displaced families.
This renewed partnership with Saint-Gobain Foundation builds on years of collaboration and underscores a shared commitment to innovation, inclusion and rebuilding lives through shelter — ensuring that families affected by the war can move from displacement toward stability and hope.
