Pop-up doors in Oakland

Everyone deserves a decent place to call home. For 50 years, we have turned our mission into a reality by helping millions of people around the world build, improve or finance their homes.

Today, we’re building on that momentum.

We’re popping up in 9 cities with an art installation of 10 doors, each featuring work from local artists and real homeowner stories.

Together, they represent what’s possible with a safe, decent foundation.

Building on our momentum.

Through hands-on builds, pop-up exhibits, compelling new research and powerful storytelling, we’re bringing housing to the center stage at a global scale. Learn more.

For the past 10 years, Dean has balanced his career as an illustrator and a gallery artist. This is a teaser image of his door artwork.

I had two ideas when sketching for this project. One was making a very fantastical and conceptual depiction of what a home is, a cross-section of the interior of a home with lots of rooms. That might be exciting to draw.

Or I could go in the other direction and create a piece more humbling and truer to what my home is. I looked at our walls and saw all the loose papers and drawings taped to them. Cups of pencils and pens are easily accessible on my desk and my daughters’ as well. Our home is an open invitation for our daughter to create.

My goal with this piece was to challenge myself technically by creating several layers of images to create a larger scene. But I also wanted to take on the challenge of making something super personal. A literal window into my family’s life. It’s something I don’t share publicly. But when it comes to art, and especially in this current time, I think authenticity is what we want the most. And getting my daughter’s help was the most fun part of this project!
