To help families recover from Hurricane Michael, Verizon announced its foundation is providing $1 million in support of Habitat for Humanity’s recovery efforts. Although hurricanes can be dangerous killers, planning ahead and being prepared can reduce the chances of injury and major property damage.

Disaster preparedness: Floods and flash floods

Some floods develop slowly, while others develop in just minutes. Being prepared and taking mitigation measures, such as building away from floodplains and elevating homes, can reduce the risk of damage and injuries in a flood.

Newly approved legislation would authorize competitive grant program for weatherization services

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved the Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015, which contains a provision supported by Habitat that would authorize a competitive grant program for national nonprofits providing weatherization services.
