After hurricanes Irma and Maria barreled across Puerto Rico, many families were unable to access disaster assistance because they did not have proof of a clear title for their homes. In response, Habitat and AbbVie began working together to help families secure land tenure through title clearance.
After a 2021 tornado outbreak, families in two of the affected Kentucky communities worked alongside volunteers to build their homes during blitz builds supported by The Home Depot Foundation.
With the support of allies like Whirlpool Corporation, Habitat’s U.S. advocacy campaign has helped to influence policy and reshape systems to increase access to affordable housing.
With Abbvie’s support, Habitat will partner directly with hurricane-affected families to address their shelter needs as part of the the long-term solution for Puerto Rico.
Too many among the general public aren’t aware that the egregious racial disparities in America that exist today — in education, employment, health and wealth — are linked to Black families’ exclusion from accessing decent and affordable shelter – something we all need to thrive.
With the help of volunteers and donors like you, we are able to provide shelter assistance, education, training and partnerships to the affected individuals who find themselves in unthinkable situations rebuilding after a disaster strikes.
