It was 1942, and on the outskirts of the rural South Georgia town of Americus, a radical experiment began. Koinonia Farm was the culmination of the lifelong passions of farmer and biblical scholar Clarence Jordan. On that farm, among rows of pecan trees, after years of struggles caused by boycotts and persecution, the seeds for Habitat for Humanity were sown.
An estimated 6% of households in Latin America and the Caribbean have predominantly dirt floors, leaving millions of families at risk of catching serious, sometimes deadly diseases. By replacing dirt floors with concrete, we can help vulnerable families improve their health outcomes.
The Hilti Foundation and Habitat aim to help millions of people around the world gain access to affordable housing. The two organizations will work with a diverse coalition of partners, communities and government officials to advance long-term, scalable housing solutions.
