Habitat report: Emerging economies undervalue housing’s share of GDP, risk missing a key to COVID-19 recovery

Emerging economies struggling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic may be significantly underestimating how much their housing sectors contribute to gross domestic product and, as a result, missing opportunities for economic and social revival, according to a report released by Habitat for Humanity to mark World Habitat Day.

“Every youth represents one innovative idea”

Twenty-two-year-old Kannika Nhem began volunteering with Habitat Cambodia in 2019 for personal growth. And while it has been a fun way to meet new people, develop her talents and explore her interests, she remains a volunteer for another reason.

“I find that the most important inspiration now comes from my fuller understanding of the housing issue in Cambodia and all the ways Habitat works to solve it,” says the university student. “Not only is Habitat Cambodia building safe shelters and environments, but they are also helping people increase their knowledge and skills so that they can keep their income and housing stable.”

Self-reliance

Habitat’s financial education classes not only helped Ronessa budget for Habitat’s affordable mortgage payments, she also used those new skills to launch her own successful business.

Recognizing that the payday loan industry is trapping many low-income Americans in a harmful debt cycle, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced on June 2, 2016, a proposed national rule to curb predatory lending practices.

World Habitat Day

More than 30 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly took an important step in promoting the idea that everyone deserves a decent place to live by declaring that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day.
