Travel accident and sickness insurance coverage

This page is not a contract of insurance. The terms and conditions of coverage are set forth in the policy on file with Habitat for Humanity International under policy number AHB0000017-241.

To join a Global Village build, volunteers are required to pay a program donation which will automatically cover travel accident and sickness insurance. This insurance is mandatory for all volunteers.

Travel accident and sickness insurance covers medical costs from accidents, illnesses and accidental loss of life, limb, sight, speech or hearing while participating in volunteer activities sponsored and supervised by Habitat for Humanity. For volunteers traveling outside of their country of residence, the policy also covers certain evacuations due to medical, weather or security emergencies. For volunteers traveling domestically (at least 100 mi/160 km from their primary residence), this policy also covers certain evacuations arising from medical emergencies.

This mandatory insurance coverage is underwritten by Everest Reinsurance Company. It is designed to protect Global Village and Habitat and Thrivent Worldwide program volunteers and is part of Habitat for Humanity International’s comprehensive risk management system.

Coverage for volunteers

These Volunteer Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan documents provide a brief outline of the coverage and services, including the coverage period, benefits, exclusions, claim procedures and contact information. These services are not guaranteed. Reimbursement for any service expenses is limited to the terms and conditions of the policy under which volunteers are insured. Volunteers may be required to pay for services not covered.

Travel assistance

Everest’s travel assistance provider, Healix Global, may provide volunteers with medical, personal, travel and/or security assistance. Travel assistance services are only available when the insurance policy is in effect. Some assistance is offered only for international travel. View the travel assistance program summary (PDF).

Healix Global makes every effort to refer volunteers to appropriate service providers. It is not responsible for the quality or results of service given by independent providers. In all cases, the medical provider, facility, legal counsel or other professional service provider suggested by Healix Global is not an employee or agent of Healix Global, and the choice of provider is the volunteer’s alone. Healix Global assumes no liability for the services provided to volunteers under this arrangement, nor is it liable for any negligence or other wrongful acts or omissions of any of the legal or health care professionals providing services.
