In 1996, Maria applied to Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program in the hopes of providing a safe and stable home for her five children. Now 25 years later, she and her friends celebrated her final mortgage payment, and in Habitat tradition, they burned the mortgage papers she signed all those years ago.
In November 2020, Tvasta Manufacturing printed a 600-square-foot home in concrete over the course of 30 days, made possible with investment from Habitat’s ShelterTech. With improvements, the start-up hopes to cut that time down to about a week.

The 2018 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project marked the 35th year that the former president and first lady built alongside volunteers and future Habitat homeowners.
Our Innovation Awards recognize global innovators developing solutions to advance affordable housing. The 2021 winners in the inspirational practices category, generously sponsored by Whirlpool Corporation, developed practical solutions that improved housing in Germany, Colombia and India.
