Having a new stair lift installed with help from Lowe’s has made it easier for Richard and Carolyn to age safely in place in their home of 46 years.
Lisa is the second resident to move into Female Veterans Village, a community that will provide a safe space for women veterans to overcome housing instability and where residents can develop a support system amongst fellow service members.
Patricia needed to build a ramp to help her son safely get in and out of their home. With the support of Habitat and Lowe’s, and help from volunteers, James now has a ramp, and Patricia has greater security and peace of mind.
Making a difference for families in need of affordable housing is a priority for the more than 175 Bank of America employees who are volunteering at Habitat’s Carter Work Project.
“Taking a shower and having proper handrails in the tub. The handrail in the hallway for helping us steady ourselves,” Bryant says. “They’re little things, but they’re game-changers when you get older.”
When Hurricane Harvey tore into Texas in September 2017, six local Habitat for Humanity organizations responded as soon as floodwaters ebbed. In the time since, Habitat has built or repaired homes with families in affected communities, in addition to providing disaster-related services and loans to homeowners.
José started a new career in construction after attending Habitat Builds Puerto Rico, a 5 1/2-week program established with the support of AbbVie that trains students interested in entering the construction industry.
“I want to be in my house, to sling my own pots and pans,” 80-year-old Alice says. Memphis Habitat has helped her do just that with their aging in place initiative.
