In 1996, Maria applied to Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program in the hopes of providing a safe and stable home for her five children. Now 25 years later, she and her friends celebrated her final mortgage payment, and in Habitat tradition, they burned the mortgage papers she signed all those years ago.

When Hurricane Harvey tore into Texas in September 2017, six local Habitat for Humanity organizations responded as soon as floodwaters ebbed. In the time since, Habitat has built or repaired homes with families in affected communities, in addition to providing disaster-related services and loans to homeowners.

A U.S. Army National Guard veteran and father of four, Moses had dreamed of and worked toward the day where he and his family could have a home of their own. He almost couldn’t believe it when the family services coordinator for Honolulu Habitat for Humanity said, “Welcome to the Habitat family.”
In 1991, five volunteers opened Habitat for Humanity’s first-ever ReStore in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Today, there are more than 1,000 ReStore locations across six countries, all contributing to Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
