In 1996, Maria applied to Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program in the hopes of providing a safe and stable home for her five children. Now 25 years later, she and her friends celebrated her final mortgage payment, and in Habitat tradition, they burned the mortgage papers she signed all those years ago.
Former President Jimmy Carter served others his whole life, and we’ve been honored that this incredible passion led him to partner with Habitat for over 30 years. President Carter shared with us what inspired him to pursue a lifetime of helping others – a mission that has changed thousands of lives.

Volunteering has largely been the story of his life — traveling the globe to make use of the random and sometimes eccentric experiences, talents and skills he’s gathered to serve others.
